About IHRB: Our Mission

The Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB) is a global centre of excellence and expertise on the relationship between business and internationally proclaimed human rights standards.

We provide a trusted, impartial space for dialogue and independent analysis to deepen understanding of human rights challenges and issues and the appropriate role of business. We seek to address problems where the law may be unclear, where accountability and responsibility may not be well-defined, and where legitimate dispute settlement mechanisms may be non-existent or poorly-administered.

The Institute works to raise corporate standards and strengthen public policy to ensure that the activities of companies do not contribute to human rights abuses, and in fact lead to positive outcomes.

Our Approach

Developing research and influencing policy:

IHRB is dedicated to undertaking cutting edge research and analysis on key thematic issues at the interface of human rights and private sector activity. We seek to be a trusted convener of diverse perspectives around our focus issues which will lead to high quality research and policy recommendations designed to inform and influence government policies as well as business practices.

Communicating and raising awareness:

IHRB serves as an independent voice on human rights and business issues. We produce in-depth reports and policy briefs exploring key thematic topics as well as regular web commentaries on business and human rights issues in the news. We organise regular "Exchange Forum" events bringing together leading experts with diverse stakeholders to discuss timely subjects on the business and human rights agenda.

Evaluating practice and building capacity:

IHRB works directly with business leaders, government officials and others to evaluate the effectiveness of current policies, operational practices and multi-stakeholder initiatives relevant to human rights. We support capacity-building for institutions committed to constructive engagement on business and human rights-related challenges, provide analysis of human rights performance and report on emerging efforts by governments, companies and other stakeholders.
