Have the UNGPs really changed corporate behaviour?
2 July 2026
Fifteen years on from the adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), IHRB's Salil Tripathi speaks to Anita Ramasastry, Professor of Law at the University of Washington, about whether the UNGPs have been effective at strengthening corporate accountability, and how they might evolve in the years to come.
They discuss whether Principles have helped uphold human rights, or whether real change only comes once governments turn them into law. They also talk about an international treaty on business and human rights; why getting justice for people harmed by companies remains so hard; and the areas the UNGPs haven't reached yet, including artificial intelligence and professions like law, banking and defence.
