Working in a warzone: risks to seafarers
23 May 2024
Seafarers on commercial vessels are increasingly being caught, even targeted, during armed conflict.
In this podcast episode, IHRB’s Francesca Fairbairn explores issues of safety and security for seafarers when working in a warzone. She hears from John Attenborough from Mission to Seafarers, an organisation that advocates for shipping crew. John shares accounts from seafarers caught up in recent attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea.
Francesca also speaks to Ian Ralby, an expert in maritime law, who offers analysis of some of the current maritime threats; insights into the complexities of maritime law and how it can leave seafarers vulnerable; and how responses from shipping companies to attacks have evolved.
