Meaningful engagement: what it really takes to work well with communities

VOICES Podcast

What does it take to ensure meaningful engagement between companies and communities?

IHRB’s Salil Tripathi hears from Froydis Cameron-Johansson, an executive who has spent nearly 30 years working with oil, gas, and mining companies. Froydis also is on the faculty for IHRB’s Masters Course in Business and Human rights.

Froydis' work has focused on how to consult and engage with communities impacted by a company’s activities. She’s seen good practice first hand, as well as what can happen when things go wrong.

In this episode, you’ll hear why it’s so important to treat consultation with communities as an ongoing relationship, rather than a one-off event; and why FPIC (Free Prior and Informed Consent) goes far beyond getting a legal permit.
