Promoting Human Rights, Ensuring Social Inclusion and Avoiding Conflict in the Extractives Sector

The Post-2015 Development Agenda is taking shape. A list of 17 proposed Sustainable Development Goals to be attained by 2030 has been released by the UN’s Open Working Group on Sustainable Development. The SDGs are currently being negotiated between UN member states.

The Government of Brazil and UNDP organised a dialogue on the Extractive Sector and Sustainable Development − Enhancing Public-Private Cooperation in the context of the Post-2015 Agenda from 3-5 December 2014. The dialogue brought together representatives from governments, business, civil society, the UN system and academia to discuss the role the extractive sector can play in eradicating poverty and promoting sustainable development.

For the purpose of manageability and focused discussion during the dialogue, the wide range of sustainable development priorities as articulated in the proposed Sustainable Development Goals were into four thematic areas.

As preparation for the event, UNDP and its partners prepared four global background papers which highlight good practice examples and approaches and identify challenges and gaps that need to be addressed going forward. On the theme of Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, free from injustices and conflicts, IHRB has published a report on promoting human rights, ensuring social inclusion and avoiding conflict in the extractives sector.
