Charting a Fairer Course: Advances in Seafarers’ Rights

IHRB and Future-Proof – a collaboration platform between the Rafto Foundation and Bergen Chamber of Commerce - are teaming up for a seminar on Charting a Fairer Course: Advances in Seafarers’ Rights. The session will take place at Wilhelmsen Hub, Stranden 30, Aker Brygge tent on Monday 2nd June 2025, at 12-3pm CET. Lunch will be provided.
Seafarers' rights have received increasing attention over the last five years and the shipping industry should be proud of its progress. However, there remain entrenched issues, and sticking points around human rights due diligence that need to be addressed. There is also scope to increase the role of finance in ensuring seafarer welfare. Charting a Fairer Course: Advances in Seafarers' Rights will aim to address all these issues with a mix of panels and conversation. The outcome will be actionable ideas for shipping industry representatives, as well as food for thought for further positive change. Specifically we will address these questions:
- What are the problems?
- What are the guardrails?
- Where are the gaps?
- What can we do?
The event will be useful for cargo owners and charterers, ship owners, operators, managers and financers, and civil society/unions.
The event is free, but please register using the link provided. Detailed programme and speakers will be announced on this page page shortly.
This event will coincide with this year's Nor-Shipping, the global Ocean Leadership Conference, which takes place biennially over five days in Oslo and welcomes over 50,000 participants.
Speakers will include:
- Wiebke Schütt, Wilhelmsen Ship Management
- Rachel Lock, DNV
