11 October 2022 NTUC, Singapore

To mark the first anniversary of the publication of Delivering on Seafarers’ Rights - code of conduct for the industry, IHRB, SSI and Rafto are co-hosting a Roundtable event in Singapore on 11th October 2022. The invitation-only Chatham House roundtable will bring together charterers, seafarers and seafarers’ rights organisations, shipowners, and others to focus on the seafarers’ voice and discuss hurdles and benefits to implementing the Code of Conduct. This is particularly relevant with the World Benchmarking Alliance due to publish the results of its transport benchmark in late October.

A detailed agenda and further information will follow, but the aim of the "SEAFAIRER" roundtable is to provide:

  • an opportunity for dialogue between seafarers, shipping companies and cargo owners to address the importance of protecting seafarer rights as the world moves beyond the pandemic;
  • reflections from both industry and seafarers' perspectives on the value of an industry code of conduct and other drivers for progress;
  • a deep-dive into two significant but under-addressed risks for seafarers: (i) debt from paying recruitment fees, and (ii) abandonment of crew and vessels;
  • discussion on moving towards greater accountability and transparency.

The roundtable will be followed by a reception at the Norwegian Ambassador's residence.
