05 June 2023 Oslo

There are nearly two million seafarers in the global merchant navy. They hail from many countries, contexts and recruitment paths, with an often complex chain of responsibility in terms of ensuring and upholding their rights.

The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) provides the global legal floor in terms of port state policing. But the Code of Conduct for Seafarers goes further, and gives ship owners and operators the means to show they are committed to seafarers’ rights.

As the code of conduct moves towards its third year, the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, IHRB, and Wilhelmsen Ship Management, with assistance from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, will host this event to discuss the journey towards verification and transparency, particularly in the context of the Norwegian Transparency Act and other legislative developments.

With recent IHRB research revealing widespread charging of illegal recruitment fees among seafarers, the event will also look at the issue of responsible recruitment, and how brands, charterers and shipping companies themselves can pull together to eradicate this illegal practice for all seafarers.
